Dr Frank Foden passed away in November 1999 just before the publication of the Tyndall publication Prometheus’s Fire, to which he contributed an article. He was retired for a number of years, and writing local histories inthe Orkneys.
He was formerly Head of the Department of General Education at Loughborough College, and a teacher in the University of Technology. He had investigated many aspects of the examination system and published extensively in the field..
In particular, he was the author of two widely regarded biographical studies on Sir Philip Magnus and the Rev James Booth. He was an authority on the history of both the Royal Society of Arets and the City and Guilds examinations.
